Nuts and Bolts
I spent many an afternoon propped up on the Holmes' sofa watching Batman re-runs, the original, followed by Dragnet re-runs, also the original, and grazing on Nuts-n-Bolts from an old Charles Chips tin. Those were the days. The Holmes' home always had a plethora of snacks, and cokes from under the sink, to satisfy any hungry teenager.
Over the years the nuts-n-bolts recipe from Mrs. Homes has changed slightly in my kitchen, but it still takes me back to high school every time I open the tin. We use a Christmas tin - all year 'round.
Nuts-n-Bolts
1/2 box each of Corn, Wheat and Rice Chex cereal
1/2 can/jar of unsalted peanuts (pecans are really good in this too!)
1/2 bag pretzels, twists or sticks- your choice
2 sticks real butter
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp onion powder
Melt butter in a saucepan (or microwave) and stir in the garlic and onion powders. Most recipes call for onion salt and garlic salt but I think the powders are much more flavorful, and less salty.
Mix the cereals, nuts and pretzels in a large roasting pan. Pour of the butter mixture and mix well. Bake for two hours in a 250 oven, stirring every 30 minutes. Cool completely then store in an airtight container. Or Charles Chips tin.
